But it’s not all fun and games. Behind the scenes, there’s someone making sure everything is safe – Paul Schwartz, New York City’s “chief balloon officer.” He and his team of engineers check the parade route two months in advance, making sure there are no obstacles. Safety is a big deal, especially after an incident in 1997 when a Cat in the Hat balloon hit a lamppost and hurt four people.

Paul Schwartz and his team use special tools to figure out how high the big balloons can go in different wind speeds. They even do test runs at MetLife Stadium to make sure everything works smoothly. They keep an eye on the weather on parade day, too, because if the wind is too strong, the balloons stay on the ground. The last time that happened was way back in 1971!

Recently, they tested the newest balloons in a parking lot at MetLife Stadium. Despite a few challenges, like Snoopy’s wobbly line and Kung Fu Panda’s deflated paw, everything got a thumbs up. So, get ready for a fantastic parade, where the balloons, floats, and performances come together for a day of joy and celebration!
